Six of Cups

The Six is memory and innocence: childhood, nostalgia, kindness given without calculation.

It is warm and it is backward-looking, and the card holds both facts without resolving them. That refusal is the whole of it. Nothing here decides whether looking back is comfort or trap.

The detail that tips it is in the background. A guard is walking away from the walled garden, which is one of Smith's quiet compositional notes: the security in this picture is real and it is enclosed, and the walls that protect are the walls that limit.

Nostalgia, reunion, somebody from the past returning. Simple generosity, given without an eye on what comes back.

Also reconnecting with what you were like before you learned to be careful, which the tradition treats as retrieval rather than regression. Something was available to you once that is available again.

In an advice position it favours the uncalculated gesture: the message sent for no reason, the gift with no occasion, the kindness that gains you nothing. The card is old-fashioned about this and unembarrassed.

Stuck in the past. Idealising something that was not that good, which is the reversal's speciality and is nearly impossible to see from inside.

Memory edits. A period recalled as golden was usually mixed at the time, and the card reversed describes a comparison being run against a version that never existed.

Or, more positively, finally moving forward and leaving it behind. Both readings are common, and the surrounding cards decide which. The second is frequently a relief that has been years arriving.

An ex returning, a childhood connection, or affection with something uncomplicated in it.

The returning-ex reading is the one people come to this card for, and it needs handling honestly. The card describes contact from the past. It says nothing about whether that contact is good news, and the tradition is clear that the returning person is usually returning to a version of things that has stopped existing.

Reversed, a relationship living entirely on its own history: two people sustained by what they were rather than by what they are, which can run for years and is not unhappy so much as static.

As somebody's feelings, it reads as fond, warm and rooted in the past. Genuine affection, oriented backwards, which is a real answer and often not the one being hoped for.

A former colleague or employer reappearing. Work connected to children, to heritage, or to something you used to do.

It favours the return: the old contact who has an opportunity, the field re-entered after years away, the skill picked up again. The tradition reads professional networks as long-lived and this card is where that pays.

Reversed, a career sustained by a reputation that is now historical. That is a real and awkward position, and the card names it without unkindness.

Money from the past: an inheritance, a returned debt, an old arrangement resurfacing. Gifts, given and received.

Associated with money that arrives rather than money that is earned, and with the particular complications of money that comes attached to family.

Reversed, an old financial arrangement that has quietly outlived its terms: the standing order to something no longer used, the loan nobody has mentioned in three years, the account from a former life.

Recovering an earlier, simpler faith, and innocence understood as something regained rather than merely lost.

It is the minor-arcana version of the argument The Sun makes: what comes back after experience is a different thing from what was there before it, and is not a retreat.

Associated with practices from childhood revisited deliberately, and with the finding that a tradition left behind at fifteen is worth a second look at forty, on the grounds that it was probably rejected for reasons about authority rather than about content.

Childhood conditions, inherited patterns, and family medical history.

Read as reflection rather than diagnosis, its most practically useful association is the plainest: knowing what runs in your family is genuinely useful medical information, and a surprising number of people have never asked.

Otherwise it points at comfort and gentleness as treatment, and at the recovery of habits that used to work. Nothing here assesses anything, and a pattern that concerns you belongs in a conversation with a doctor who can see the whole history.
