Four of Wands

The Four is arrival and celebration: a stable foundation reached, and a community that shows up for it.

One of the warmest cards in the deck and one of the least complicated.

Four wands form a garland-hung canopy, read by almost everybody as a wedding canopy, with two figures raising bouquets beneath it. The structure is open on all sides. This shelter does not enclose anybody, which is the difference between a threshold and a wall.

Homecoming, marriage, a milestone, a threshold crossed with people who care.

Stability worth marking, and the marking is the instruction rather than a decoration of it. Take the celebration seriously, because the card treats an unmarked achievement as an incomplete one.

In an advice position it is one of the few that will tell you to stop working and hold a party, and it means it literally.

A celebration that feels hollow, or a homecoming to somewhere that is not home.

Transition without the settled feeling, which is common after a move, a wedding or a promotion: everything is correct and nothing has landed.

Also read for tension within family or community, particularly around the occasions that are supposed to be happy. The card is unsurprised by that combination.

Engagement, moving in, meeting family, public commitment. Warm and secure.

It is the card of the relationship becoming visible to other people, and the tradition treats that visibility as doing real work rather than as ceremony. Saying a thing in front of witnesses changes it.

Reversed, a relationship missing the stability it appears to have. The canopy is up and the ground underneath has not been checked, which is a specific and quiet difficulty around weddings and moves.

As somebody's feelings, it reads as settled, warm and ready to be public: this person is not hiding you and would happily tell people.

A milestone reached, a team that works, a workplace that feels like somewhere you belong.

It covers the completion celebrated properly: the launch, the contract, the end of something long, and the colleagues who were part of it.

Reversed, instability under a settled surface, which in an organisation usually means a good announcement covering an unresolved problem everybody can already see.

Financial security sufficient to build a home on. Property, and the point where money becomes somewhere to live rather than a number.

Associated with the deposit, the move, the mortgage that completes: money doing the thing it was being saved for.

Reversed, a home that is financially precarious, where the outward stability and the underlying arrangement do not match.

Belonging: ritual, threshold, and the marking of passage.

This is community practice rather than solitary, and the card takes the position that thresholds crossed without ceremony tend not to feel crossed.

Associated with rites of passage across traditions, and with the observation that the ones that endure are almost always held in front of other people.

Recovery supported by other people, and the social element treated as the medicine rather than the garnish.

Read as reflection rather than diagnosis, it describes convalescence in company: the people who visit, the household that adjusts, the return to ordinary life being marked.

Its practical claim is well supported. Isolation is a health risk and company is a health input, which is the plainest thing this card has to say.
